Quickly filling in field names

Today, I've got a very quick article on automatically filling in field names. This technique is commonly used when you are quickly entering a number of games, and want to assign a single tournament name to them. Or let's say you've recorded a number of games that you played on an internet server, and want to make sure that the server name is properly recorded.

Let's assume that you've got these games already recorded and stored in a database, and you don't want to change the recorded location for all the games, just a subset of them. The procedure for doing this is as follows:

1. Create a new dataset with all games you want to change
2. Select the field you want to change in the column heading.
3. Select the fill command from right click submenu
4. Click on the appropriate player/place name

Let's look at an example. In the database below, I've got several games that were played in an engine vs. engine tournament. Assume that I want to change the tournament location (for all the games) to something like "home".

The first thing we do is form a new dataset by clicking on the game number in the left hand column for each of the five games (for example, click on the numbers 3,4,5,6,7). This highlights them in blue.

Then right-click over the games, and select "Create dataset from highlighted games", as is shown in the figure above. After that, you'll see a list of games. Next click on the column labeled "Site". You should see something like this:

Now right-click, and select "Fill".

You should now get another dialog box as shown below. Here, you click on the ellipses (where the mouse pointer is sitting).

You should see something like the dialog box below. Here, just click on the entry that says "Home". If you don't see an entry that's the proper location for the games, then you'll have to create one using the "Add" button. After you've got everything set, click on the "OK" button for this, and the previous dialog.

Behold! The games have had all their locations changed to "Home".
