Convekta's bundle of six world champion game collections is the ideal choice if you want to study these great players. This collection of material comes in a single DVD box containing four CDs. The first contains Lasker, Alekhine and Capablanca. Tal, Botvinnik, and Spassky are on the remaining three CDs.
Each CD contains a collection of commented games as well as a test section, in which key positions are used to illustrate typical thematic play. Of course, the test positions are taken from the particular player of interest, and are usually illustrative of that player's style.
Rather than simply repeat what I've said before about these products, I've instead created a summary table containing the number of commented games that each collection holds, and links to reviews on ChessAssistance and ChessReviews. You can also find another overview article (with screenshots) here.
| Player and link to review | # of commented games | # of test positions |
| Emanuel Lasker | 630 | 202 |
| Jose Raul Capablanca | 640 | 208 |
| Alexander Alekhine | 1300 | 202 |
| Mikhail Tal | 2592 | 253 |
| Mikhail Botvinnik | 1069 | 350 |
| Boris Spassky | 2365 | 183 |
The three standouts in the collection would have to be the Capablanca, Tal and Botvinnik collections. I think also that the Lasker CD is pretty good, but to be honest, I have trouble understanding some of his games because of their strong psychological component - Lasker does not always play the best move from an objective standpoint, instead he may play a move that is most likely to confound his opponent. This type of reasoning is sometimes difficult to understand.
I think it goes without saying that this bundle is an excellent value, and should see one through their entire chess career.
